One of the must-do activities in Musandam is the fjords ride on a traditional Omani boat. Khasab and other cities in Musandam are all made up of a variety of rock formations branching in and out of the ocean that extend to form the Omani tip of the Strait of Hormuz. The scenery of the fjords of Musandam is unmatched by any natural water scene in this region of the world as it blends the majestic hajr mountains with the crystal-like waters of the Gulf.
If you are in Khasab, you can arrange to have a fjords boat ride from any of the numerous tour operators in the city. Alternatively you can go with no prior booking to the port of khasab, which is located near Khasab Castle and behind the huge Lulu Hypermarket of Khasab. Once at the port simply walk around to look for a boat about to leave and ask to go on it. The usual cost for taking the fjords boat ride is RO 15 per person, but if you go directly to the port on your own you may be able to get on one for RO 12 per person.
The traditional boats used for the fjords ride are comfortable and are equipped with traditional Arab cushions. The trip usually takes between two and three hours and will involve going around the fjords and stopping half way through to allow anyone wishing to swim to take a dip in the water. The boats usually serve fruits, water, soft drinks, and coffee free of charge. Most boats will also have snorkelling equipments and towels – all of which are provided free of charge.
The boats do not have a fixed timing, but they seem to be have a couple of morning sessions and a couple of afternoon sessions. If you go during the early morning sessions you will be more likely to spot dolphins and other wild life, while the late afternoon sessions can reward you with breathtaking view of the sunset between the fjords. As an alternative to the regular big boat rides, you can also hire individual small boats that cane take four to six people to take you on a more personalized trip. These can also be arranged through a tour operator or by looking for one at the port itself.
A sea trip around the fjords of Musandam is one of the most amazing experiences that you can have in Musanadam. Do not miss it if you are coming to this side of the country.
